How to share playing time fairly in youth football

Equal playing time in youth football: work out fair minutes for ten players in a 7-a-side match, with a four-period rotation and a free team sheet builder.

Last updated: 14 October 2026

Fair minutes start with the places available, not a promise that everyone can play exactly the same time. Seven places × 40 minutes = 280 player-minutes. Dividing by ten gives an average of 28 minutes each.

  1. Count the available minutes

Seven places over 40 minutes give 280 player-minutes. Ten players would average 28 minutes each. A goalkeeper occupies one of those seven places; time in goal is already included.

  2. Choose periods you can manage

Four ten-minute periods give 28 appearances. Eight players can play three periods (30 minutes); two can play two (20 minutes). Exact equality is impossible with these fixed periods. Shorter periods can narrow the gap but mean more changes to manage.

  3. Agree the keeper arrangement

This example rotates the goalkeeper among players already on the pitch. A fixed keeper changes the allocation, so choose the arrangement before calculating the sheet.

  4. Review changes before sharing

Check every player and period, then tell the children when they are due on. If somebody arrives late or leaves injured, update attendance and review the recalculated sheet. The plan cannot count minutes already played for you.

Worked example: ten players, seven places

These fictional names use the same allocator as the free builder: seven on the pitch, four ten-minute periods, rotating keepers. The keeper is included in the seven, and each period has three substitutes.

When everyone plays at once

Within Bibs On, 3v3 and 4v4 sheets divide children into teams and pitches so everyone plays, rather than allocating substitute periods. Check your league's format and arrangements. Keep a record across matches if some children get fewer periods this week. Review attendance changes and keeper choices before sending the parents' link.
